Gangneung Solhyang Arboretum, themed after the red pine tree, a species native to Gangneung,
features various wildflowers and beautiful valleys.
It is a famous attraction where you can enjoy a healing woodland walk.
You can take plenty of trails without much difficulty, so it is popular among the residents and tourists.
More recently, however, Solhyang Arboretum is also becoming a popular nighttime tourist attraction.
The Arboretum decided to open at night so that tourists and residents alike can enjoy a walk in beautiful nature.
At 6:00 p.m. (summertime), Solhyang Arboretum closes to reorganize the grounds and
prepare for its nighttime opening from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Nighttime walks are a great way to see a different face to Solhyang Arboretum.
At night, Gangneung Solhyang Arboretum transforms into a colorful forest with 14 types of lights,
including tree projections and 713 lighting fixtures.
Solbat Rest Area Lighting
When one arrives at the entrance to the Arboretum,
the Solbat Rest Area to the left-hand side of the parking lot is brightly lit.
Sitting on a bench in front of the garland and the lighting between
the pine trees feels like camping in the woods.
Solhyang Arboretum’s nighttime opening is restricted to parts of its barrier-free trails for easy access.
Start from the entrance and follow the valley to the left.
The lights that filter onto the stream change into different colors that synchronize
with the sound of the water, creating yet another charming atmosphere from the daytime.

The prime spot for a night view in Solhyang Arboretum is the wooden bridge over the valley.
One side of the bridge shows the waterside lights,
while the other shows dragon lights in the shape of a dragon.
“Yongso” in Korean folklore refers to ponds left behind by ascending dragons; indeed,
it seems the dragon is rising to the heavens from the valley.
Different dragons with different forms flicker across one’s vision.
Forest Ecology Observation Trail_Firefly lights
Walk past the pond lights and onto the wooden decks to reach the Forest Ecology Observation Trail.
Fireflies shining in the dark unfold like a scene from a fairy tale.
These fireflies are small lights that sway with the leaves in the wind and scatter their brilliance into the air.
Grass Lawn in the Forest Plaza_Pine needle–shaped lights
Follow the Forest Ecology Observation Trail to find a clearing with a grass lawn.
Colorful lights scatter on the lawn like brushes of color on a massive canvas.
Lights shaped like pine needles change colors, creating a beautiful spectacle.
Trees seem to come into life with lights filtering onto their trunks.
The light seems to climb onto the trees to rise to the sky.
It takes about 30 minutes to circle the Arboretum at night.
Despite its short length, it is still a great place to enjoy the night view.
You can also sit on a bench, listen to the sound of water and chirping insects, and reflect.
Above all, the trail is barrier-free, making this light night walk accessible for all.
