Jeongdongsimgok Badabuchae Trail (hereinafter Badabuchae Trail) is the only marine terrace area in Korea
where you can witness the remains of crustal movements that occurred 2.3 million years ago.
A marine terrace is a type of geographical feature that resembles stairs along a coastal line.
The marine terrace of Badabuchae Trail, created with crustal movements and seawater erosion,
holds the secrets of the birth of the eastern sea of Korea 2.3 million years ago.
Jeongdongjin’s “tip of fan” geographical feature and the shape of where the trail is laid resemble a fan spread toward the sea; hence,
the name “Badabuchae Trail (sea fan trail)” was given.
Badabuchae Trail is a 2.86 km long trail that connects Jeongdongjin to Simgok Port.
On this trail, you can enjoy nature’s artworks in close proximity.
Pebble Beach
Badabuchae Trail has two starting points: One at the Jeongdong Ticket Booth located north,
the other at the Simgok Ticket Booth located south at Simgok Port.
If you begin at the Jeongdong Ticket Booth, you will be greeted with a steep flight of stairs
that go down to the ocean as soon as you pass the ticket booth.
At the end of the stairs is the pebble beach.
The beach offers crystal-clear songs of seawater escaping through pebbles.
Walk on the decked path that stretches along the coastal cliffs,
and you will be awestruck by the crushing waves underneath the deck.
It will feel as if you are walking on the sea.
Tugubawi Rock
As you begin trekking from the Jeongdong Ticket Booth and walk about 1 km, you will find a rock resembling a general facing the sea with a helmet (tugu in Korean) on.
It is Tugubawi Rock. Turn to the right corner of the rock, and you will see the profile of a general with a helmet on.
Buchaebawi Rock
Buchaebawi Observatory
A 20-minute walk from Tugubawi Rock leads you to a rock that looks like a small island, protruding toward the sea.
It is Buchaebawi Rock.
It is in the shape of a spread-out folding fan, standing like a gigantic artwork created by nature.
Walk on the decked path around Buchaebawi Rock to enjoy the open view of the ocean.
You can sit on the bench at the observatory and listen to the crashing waves for a small break.
Observatory Tower
As you approach the final destination, Simgok Ticket Booth, you will see an observatory tower.
Climb the tower to see Simgok Port and Heonhwa-ro, a popular drive course, to the right.
Looking back on the path you have walked allows you to see a long Badabuchae Trail along the coastal cliffs with magnificently strange-looking rocks.
Turn to the ocean, and you will feel as if you are standing on a boat in the middle of the ocean.
It takes about one hour to complete the 2.86 km long Badabuchae Trail.
A round trip will take about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Embark on a mysterious time-travel journey at Badabuchae Trail while viewing the marine terrace,
an artwork created by nature for 2.3 million years.
