The thrill of riding the waves and becoming one with nature is the essence of surfing. Watching surfers from the beach is fun, but why not muster the courage to experience it yourself? Gangneung offers a variety of surfing spots, from Jumunjin in the north to Okgye Beach in the south. Among these, Sacheon stands out for its easy access because of its proximity to downtown Gangneung.
The area is divided by Sacheonjin Port, with Sacheonjin Beach to the north and Sacheon Beach to the south. The primary surfing spot in Sacheon is Sacheonjin Beach. It is lined with charming cafés and surf shops along the coast.
The beach is known for its clear waters and shallow depths, making it a popular destination for families. The shallow waters allow waves to roll in gently. The gentle waves and quiet beach create ideal conditions for beginners to learn surfing. The beach’s consistent sand terrain ensures a stable surfing spot. While autumn is the best season for surfing, many enjoy hitting the waves during the summer vacation season. During the beach season, surfers can ride the waves outside the designated swimming safety zones to ensure the safety of beachgoers.
Sacheon is home to six to seven surf shops along the coast. They cater to surfers of all levels. Beginners can start with theoretical lessons at these surf shops, learning surfing terminology, etiquette, and safety. These lessons often include watching videos to understand the basics of waves and different types of boards. A solid grasp of theory greatly aids in practical lessons.
After completing the theory lessons, you will receive on-land training at the beach. With a surf suit and board rented from the surf shop, you will begin your practical lessons. You’ll learn various techniques and basic movements, including paddling, push-ups, and take-offs on the board.
Once you have mastered the basic movements on land, you will enter the sea with your instructor. Then, you’ll practice the basic techniques you learned during the theory and on-land training. Practicing in the ocean can be challenging, as the movements don’t always come easily amid the rolling waves.
You’ll start with paddling and then practice the take-off stance on the board. Standing up on the board isn’t easy at first, and you might fall frequently. However, you’ll eventually experience the exhilarating moment of riding a wave. That’s when you’ll truly fall in love with surfing. With about one to two hours of basic surfing lessons and practice, including theory, you’ll be able to catch waves.
Surf shops offer various lesson programs for different skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Some even provide packages that include BBQ parties and accommodation. Experience surfing and enjoy customized package programs tailored to your preferences.
