We’ve entered the era of self-driving cars, where vehicles reach their destinations without driver intervention. Add a unique twist to your trip by experiencing autonomous vehicles in Gangneung. In anticipation of the 2026 Intelligent Transport System (ITS) World Congress, often referred to as the Olympics of transportation, Gangneung is currently conducting trial runs of self-driving cars on its roads. By installing a dedicated app on your smartphone and making a reservation, anyone can enjoy a smart tour that connects cutting-edge technology with major attractions, all for free.
These autonomous vehicles operate on three routes, covering urban areas and tourist spots, historical and cultural sites and ecological tourism, and coastal scenery. There are 23 self-driving car stops within Gangneung. Importantly, you need to check the details when making a reservation, as the vehicles and seating capacities vary by route and the departure times are fixed.
The self-driving cars, equipped with the latest technology, share vehicle information such as real-time location and sensor data through an integrated control platform.
Inside, autonomous driving devices are installed, and a safety officer accompanies each ride. The cars operate at a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour, prioritizing safety. They slow down at pedestrian crossings to ensure a sense of safety and security. It’s fascinating to see them navigate independently by recognizing surrounding vehicles and traffic signals.
Route C, starting from Ojukheon House and passing through Seongyojang House, Gyeongpoho Lake, Chodang, and Songjeong Beach to Anmok Beach, covers major tourist attractions in Gangneung, making it ideal for travelers.
The sign at each dedicated stop provides instructions on how to use the service. When you spot one during your trip, check the route and make a reservation. You will discover the smart and innovative side of Gangneung.
