• Weekend nights in Gangneung are now more exciting than ever, thanks to the Gangneung Wolhwa Street Night Market, held every Friday and Saturday in the heart of the city. This year, the market features new events and programs each month, offering even more to explore and enjoy. Here’s how to make the most of your visit.



• Wolhwa Street is a 2.6 km-long walking trail that begins at Gangneung Station and stretches through the heart of the city. With the urban section of the KTX Gangneung Line now underground, the former railway area has been beautifully transformed into this vibrant street. The street is named after Wolhwajeong Pavilion, built to commemorate the local legend “The Love Story of Muwollang and Lady Yeonhwa.” You’ll find the pavilion just across Wolhwagyo Bridge, at the end of the trail. From May to October, the Gangneung Wolhwa Street Night Market brings energy to the heart of Gangneung, surrounding Gangneung Jungang Market. This year, the market runs through October 25, lighting up weekend nights with festive energy.




• The night market is divided into three distinct zones: the Food Market, Flea Market, and Busking Zones. As expected, the Food Market Zone is the most popular. Visitors can enjoy a variety of international dishes—okonomiyaki, tacos, bun cha, and rice noodles—as well as local specialties like gamja myeongnan mayo (potato and pollock roe with mayonnaise sauce), jjamppong sundubu bibimmyeon (spicy seafood and soft bean curd stew with spicy noodles), and ongsimi danggo (potato ball skewers). Part of the fun is watching the food being freshly prepared. Once you’ve chosen your meal, enjoy it at the seating areas located in front of and behind the Food Market Zone. It’s great for casual snacking, but satisfying enough to be a full meal.






• Adjacent to the food stalls is the Flea Market Zone, where charming handicrafts and handmade desserts are on display. Here, local artisans offer handmade items that make great souvenirs, from crafts to unique desserts and drinks. Visitors can also enjoy activities like caricature drawing and tarot readings, adding a personal touch to the experience.


• In the Busking Zone, live performances bring joy and a hint of romance to Gangneung’s night. From music and dance to singing and mini concerts, there’s always something happening. In May, a special quiz event will be held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Gangneung’s elevation to city status. Winners will receive experience vouchers, which can be used in the experience zone for caricature drawing, acrylic mood light making, and photo booth sessions.






• Don’t leave without catching the Wolhwa Bridge fountain show, just a 2–3 minute walk from the Busking Zone toward Namdaecheon Stream. While the view from the bridge is impressive any time, the nighttime fountain show—enhanced by synchronized music and lighting effects—adds an unforgettable flair to your visit.



• Right next to the night market is the Gangneung Jungang Market, a favorite among both locals and tourists. It offers a different lineup of local dishes than those at the night market, making it worth a separate visit. With monthly themed events throughout the season, the Gangneung Wolhwa Street Night Market has become even more vibrant and exciting.
