Introduction

“Jeongdong” in Jeongdong Simgok Badabuchae-gil Road originated from the meaning that the place is located due east from the royal residence in Seoul (Gyengbokgung Palace) with “Simgok” coined from the meaning of a village in a deep valley. The place was named “Jeongdong Simgok Badabuchae-gil Road,” as the topographic shapes of ‘fan tip’-like Jeongdongjin and the trail locations resemble an appearance of a fan spreading toward sea. Designated Natural Monument No. 437, it is the only coastal terrace in Korea which allows to observe the geological event from 23 million years ago that keeps the secret of the East Sea’s birth.

A 2.86km-long trail was built between the Jeongdongjin Sun Cruise Resort parking lot and Simgok Port, offering an opportunity to enjoy the unexplored beauty of the East Sea’s blue waves and eccentric rocks. Long been used as a patrol route for the military coastal guard, the trail now offers the magnificence of beautiful scenery.
