강릉시립미술관 솔올 캐서린 번하드 특별전시

 인사이드 더 스튜디오

강릉시립미술관 솔올은 미국 현대미술 작가 캐서린 번하드 특별전시 인사이드 더 스튜디오(Inside the Studio: Katherine Bernhardt‘s Universe)》를 개최합니다. 캐서린 번하드(1975~, 미국)는 2000년대  초  뉴욕  미술계에  혜성처럼  등장했으며, ’현대미술과 대중문화의 완벽한 교차점‘이라는 평가를 받아왔습니다. 

강릉시립미술관 솔올 전시에서는 작가의 작품 중 6m에 달하는 초대형 신작 여러 점이 한국 최초로 공개되며 총 140여 점의 대규모 작품이 전시됩니다. 이번 전시는 작가의 소속사인 세계적인 갤러리 중 하나인 데이비드 즈워너(David Zwirner)와의 협력으로 성사되었습니다.

특히 솔올 전시실에는 작가의 미국 작업실이 날것 그대로의 형태로 구현되며, 작가의 작품에 중요한 영감을 주는 작가의 샤워실 역시, 타일 바닥까지 전시실에 그대로 재현됩니다. 작가에게 있어 샤워실은 작품에 영감을 주는 중요한 장소입니다. 작가는 일상 속 사물들이 샤워를 한다고 상상합니다. ‘내 욕실에서 핑크팬더가 거품 목욕을 한다면?’ 과 같은 작가 특유의 유머를 가미한 상상에서 출발합니다.

“인간이 여전히 그림을 그리고 있다는 게 놀라워요. 수 세기 동안 이어져 온 

어떤 행위를 지금도 하고 있다는 사실 자체가요. 

컴퓨터와 기술의 시대에 붓을 들고 그림을 그리는 것이 재밌다는 생각이 들어요. 

저는 그림 그리는 걸 정말 사랑해요.”

전시는 다음의 총 5개의 섹션으로 이루어져 있습니다. ‘Section1_슈퍼모델과 캐서린 번하드의 시작, Section2_정글, 새로운 패턴 회화의 탄생, Section3_피자, 나이키, 토일렛 페이퍼, Section4_현대미술이 된 대중문화의 아이콘들, Section5_캐서린 번하드의 세계: 예술이 자라는 곳’ 작가가 미술학교를 졸업하고 몰두하던 초창기 슈퍼모델 작품부터, 일상 속 사물, 핑크팬더 시리즈까지, 작가의 생애 전반에 걸친 작품 세계를 조명합니다. 

Special Exhibition at Gangneung Art Museum Sorol

 “Inside the Studio: Katherine Bernhardt‘s Universe”

Gangneung Art Museum Sorol proudly presents the special exhibition “Inside the Studio: Katherine Bernhardt‘s Universe” spotlighting the works of American contemporary artist Katherine Bernhardt. In the early 2000s, Bernhardt (b. 1975, USA) rose to prominence in the New York art scene and has since been praised as “the perfect intersection of contemporary art and pop culture.”

At the Gangneung Art Museum Sorol exhibition, large-scale works that measure up to 6 m, including several brand-new pieces, will be unveiled in Korea for the first time, with over 140 major works to be showcased. This exhibition is made possible through collaboration with David Zwirner, one of the world’s top galleries and Bernhardt’s representing agency.

In particular, the Sorol exhibition space will feature a faithful recreation of the artist’s studio in the United States, including a replica of the shower room—an important source of inspiration for the artist—down to the tile flooring. For Bernhardt, the shower room is a crucial space that inspires her work. She imagines everyday objects taking showers. It begins with a whimsical thought infused with her unique sense of humor, coming up with ideas such as “What if the Pink Panther took a bubble bath in my bathroom?”

“It is amazing that humans are still painting. Just the act of doing something that has been going on for centuries. Holding a paintbrush and making a painting in this day and age of computers and technology seems funny to me. I love painting”

The exhibition is composed of five sections: “Section 1: Supermodels and the Beginning of Katherine Bernhardt; Section 2: Jungle, the Birth of Pattern Painting; Section 3: Pizza, Nikes, and Toilet Paper; Section 4: Pop Culture Icons Become Contemporary Art; Section 5: Katherine Bernhardt’s World—Where Art Grows.” Ultimately, this exhibition highlights the artist’s body of work throughout her career, from her early “Supermodel” series, created after graduating from art school, to everyday objects and the “Pink Panther” series.
