강릉시립미술관 기획전시『박수근: 블랙 에디션』 “박수근” 강릉시립미술관 기획전시『박수근: 블랙 에디션(Black Edition)』은 미술관 소장품인 박수근 작가의 목판화 작품 20점을 전시한다. 박수근(朴壽根, 1914-1965)은 단순화된 선과 구도 속, 회색빛 물감을 여러 차례 쌓아 올린 화강암과 같은 두툼한 질감을 표현하며, 우리의 토속적인 미감과 정서를 담아낸 한국 대표 화가이다. <봄이 오다> 작품으로 조선미술전람회(1932)에서 입상하며 데뷔했고, 대한민국미술전람회(1953, 1955, 1956) 외 다수 입상, 대한민국 은관문화훈장(1980) 등을 수여했다. “에디션” 본 전시의 모든 판화는 박수근 탄생 100주년을 맞이하여 2012년부터 2015년 사이에 제작된 작가 사후 판화(Posthumous Edition)이다. 박광열 판화가가 원판을 수지 틀로 복제하여, 수제 한지 위 1판 1색의 유성물감과 평압 프레스로 프린트했다. 강릉시립미술관이 소장한 판화는 에디션 150 중 21번째 작품으로, 소장 이후 본 전시에서 최초로 공개된다. 목판화 작품들은 나무판의 결, 양각, 음각 등의 표현을 바탕으로, 한 톤으로 프린트되어 있다. 작품 주제는 ‘포대기로 어린 동생을 업은 소녀’, ‘큰 광주리를 머리에 이고, 아이들과 함께 집으로 가는 길’ 등 일상을 담고 있다. 이를 통해 그 시절 인물, 풍경, 소박한 정취 등을 헤아릴 수 있다. “박수근 최초의 판화” 전시 대표작인 <노인과 여인>은 1958년『신미술』 9호에 수록된 ‘한국판화협회 창립전’ 출품작으로, 작가가 최초로 발표했던 판화 작품이다. 작품 속 인물들은 음각으로 새겨져 있으며, 중절모를 쓴 세 명의 노인이 담소를 나누고 있다. 그 외에 세 명의 여인이 있는데, 그중 한 여인은 뒤돌아 앉아 품에 어린아이를 안고 있다. 전반적으로 원근감을 배제한 평면적 구도가 돋보인다. “나는 워낙 추위를 타선지 겨울이 지긋지긋합니다. 그래서 그런지, 겨울도 채 오기 전에 봄 꿈을 꾸는 적이 종 종 있습니다. (중략) 허지만 겨울을 껑충 뛰어넘어 봄을 생각하는 내 가슴은 벌써 5월의 태양이 작열합니다.” 박수근『겨울을 뛰어넘어』경향신문(1961. 1. 19.) “봄 꿈” 박수근 작품에는 추운 겨울에나 볼 수 있는 이파리 하나 없는 ‘고목’이 유독 많이 등장한다. 박수근을 모티브로 한 인물이 등장하는 소설 박완서의『나목(裸木)』에서는, 겨울의 벌거벗은 나무에 여러 가지 시대상을 덧입혀 ‘나목’이라 표현하기도 한다. 전시된 판화 중에서는 <나무와 두 여인>, <나무와 여인>에서 그와 같은 나무를 찾아볼 수 있다. 작품 속 나무는 벌거벗고 있으나 인물들의 옷차림은 아주 두껍지 않은 것으로 보아, 한겨울은 아닌 완연한 봄이 오기 직전의 늦겨울 정도로 유추할 수 있다. 작가가 5월의 작열하는 태양을 꿈꾸었던 것처럼, 5월에 개최하는 본 전시를 통해 작가가 열망하던 따뜻한, 아니 뜨거운 봄을 가슴에 담고 가시길 기대한다. ■ 유지현(강릉시립미술관 학예사) A Special Exhibition at the Gangneung Museum of Art, 『Soo-keun Park: Black Edition』 “Soo-keun Park” At the special exhibition at the Gangneung Museum of Art, 『Soo-keun Park: Black Edition』 puts up on display a woodcut print, a collection of the Gangneung Museum of Art. Soo-keun Park (1914-1965) is a representative Korean artist who captures our native sense of beauty and emotion with thick textures like granite by using a technique that sees gray paint piled up several times in simplified lines and compositions. In 1932, he made his debut by winning a prize at the Joseon Art Exhibition with <Spring Comes> and won many prizes at the Korea Art Exhibition in 1953 and 1956. He was also awarded the Silver Crown Order of Cultural Merit in 1980. “Edition” All prints to be displayed in this exhibition are posthumous editions created between 2012 and 2015 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Soo-keun Park's birth. Printmaker Gwang-yeol Park reproduced the original plate with a resin frame and printed it on handmade Korean paper with oil paints, using just one color per plate and a flat press. The woodcut print kept by the Gangneung Museum of Art is the 21st work of the 150 Editions and will be unveiled for the first time in this exhibition. The artwork is printed in one tone based on the expression of the grain, embossment, and intaglio of the wooden board. The theme of the work includes images of daily life including 'a girl carrying her younger sister in a blanket' and 'people on the way home with large baskets on their heads'. The artwork arouses imagery of the people, landscapes, and simplicities of our old way of life. “Soo-keun Park's First Print work” The representative work of the exhibition, <Old Man and Woman>, was an entry in the foundation exhibition of the Korea Woodblock Printing Association, which was included in the 9th issue of 『New Art』 in 1958, and was the first print work presented by the artist. The artist used Intaglio printmaking techniques to draw figures in the work. Depicted are three old men wearing bowler hats chatting, one of whom is sitting back and holding a child in her arms. The outstanding part of this work is the flat composition that excludes perspective. “I am sick of winter because I get cold so easily. Maybe that is why I have often dreamed about spring before winter comes. (ellipsis) But thinking of spring over winter, in my heart, the May sun is already scorching.” Soo-keun Park: 『Beyond Winter』, Kyunghyang Newspaper (Jan. 19, 1961) “Spring Dream” In Soo-keun Park's works, many dead trees without leaves appear, which can only be seen in the cold winter. In Wan-seo Park’s novel, <Naked Tree>, in which a character based on Soo-keun Park appears, the bare tree in winter is sometimes referred to as a naked tree by adding various aspects of the times. Among the print works on display, you can find the naked tree in <Tree and Two Women> and <Tree and Woman>. The tree in the work is naked, but the clothes of the characters are not very thick, so it can be inferred that it is not mid-winter, but late winter right before the arrival of spring.
