강릉시립미술관 특별전시 『그날의 분위기』 “이장우 그리고 자폐화가” 강릉시립미술관 특별전시 『그날의 분위기』는 강릉문화재단 박준용청년예술문화상 수상자 이장우(1986-) 작가의 유화 작품을 전시합니다. 자폐화가라는 수식어로도 불리는 이장우는 4살 때 자폐 3급 판정을 받았습니다. 작가의 부모님은 혼자만의 세상에 고립되어 있던 7살 아들에게 붓을 쥐여 주었습니다. 초등학교 이후 미국에서 학창 시절을 보내며 유화를 배웠고, 초기 유화 작품은 <자화상>, 집에서 키우던 강아지 <메이(May)> 등이 있습니다. 이후 풍경을 담은 유화 작업에 몰입하였으며, 대표적으로 <강릉 경포 바다>, <강릉 경포 소나무> 등이 있습니다. “강릉 대형 산불” 2023년 4월 11일 강릉에 대형 산불이 번졌습니다. 본 전시 개막이 3개월도 채 남지 않은 상황에서 작가의 작업실에 보관 중이던 400여 점의 작품이 전소됐습니다. 젊은 작가의 전 생애에 걸친 작업이 한순간에 사라져 버린 것입니다. 작업실 바닥을 두껍게 덮고 있던 불타버린 잿더미 속에서도 작가의 예술혼이 불타올랐던 것일까요. 모두가 절망하였을 때, 작가는 어머니와 함께 예정되어 있던 프랑스 스케치 여행을 떠났습니다. “나는 화가입니다. 반 고흐와 같이 많은 사람들이 좋아하는 화가가 되는 것이 나의 꿈입니다.” 이장우의 대학교 과제 『나의 소개』 일부 “프랑스 스케치 여행을 담은 신작 최초 공개” 본 전시에서 최초로 선보이는 프랑스 배경의 작품들 <샤모니 몽블랑(Chamonix-Mont-Blanc)의 새벽>, <니스(Nice) 일출>, <앙티브(Antibes)>, <아몬드꽃> 등이 바로 이 여행으로 탄생했습니다. 잿더미 속에서도 오롯이 희망으로 켜켜이 쌓아 올린 신작은, 작가 특유의 안온(安穩)하고 명징(明澄)한 분위기 속 두터운 물감층과 마티에르(matière, 질감)가 돋보입니다. 시시각각 변하는 풍경에는 그날의 분위기가 담겨있습니다. 오늘 이 전시에서 여러분은 어떤 분위기를 느끼셨는지요? ■ 유지현(강릉시립미술관 학예사) Gangneung Museum of Art Special Exhibition: 『Mood of the Day』 “Jang Woo Lee and The Autistic Painter” The Gangneung Museum of Art special exhibition: 『Mood of the Day』 showcases oil paintings by the artist Jang Woo Lee (1986-), a recipient of the Park Joon Yong Young Art Culture Award, granted by the Gangneung Culture Foundation. Jang Woo Lee, also known as the Autistic Painter, was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. His parents handed a paintbrush to their seven-year-old son, who was isolated in his own world. After elementary school, Lee spent the rest of his school years in the United States, where he studied oil painting. His early works include <Self-Portrait> and <May>, a painting of his family dog. He later immersed himself in landscape paintings, notably <Gyeongpo Sea in Gangneung> and <Pine Tree at Gyeongpo, Gangneung>. “Massive Wildfire in Gangneung” On April 11, 2023, a massive wildfire broke out in Gangneung. With less than three months to the exhibition opening, over 400 artworks stored in Lee's studio were lost in the fire. A lifetime of the young artist's work disappeared in an instant. Amidst the thick ash that covered the studio floor, would Lee's artistic spirit continue to burn bright? When all hope seemed lost, Lee embarked on a previously planned sketching trip to France with his mother. “I am a painter. To become a painter loved by many, like Van Gogh, is my dream." Excerpt from Jang Woo Lee's college assignment 『Introduction of Myself』 “First Reveal of the New Works from the Sketching Trip in France” The French-themed works premiered in this exhibition were born from this trip. Pieces like <Dawn of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc>, <Sunrise in Nice>, <Antibes>, and <Almond Blossom> showcase Lee's distinctive serene and clear atmosphere layered with thick paint textures and matière. They symbolize the hope he has relentlessly built up, even amidst the ashes. The paintings capture the mood of the day within the ever-changing landscapes.
