Large-scale expansion of accommodation facilities in Gangneung City, Olympic Special Zone

Gangneung City aims to establish itself among the world's top 100 tourist destinations by expanding its accommodation facilities in the Olympic Special Zone, and preparing to become an international tourism and MICE industrial city.
Gangneung The Ocean 259 is being constructed in Gangneung City, Olympic Special Zone, with 1,105 rooms. Construction began in April last year and should be completed by the first half of 2025. The approval process for the construction of Gyeongpo Olympic County (549 rooms) is also in progress.
BNT Partners Co., Ltd., an SPC established by Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. and Korea Investment & Securities Co., Ltd., was also designated as a project implementer for "Gangneung Cultural Olympics Special Zones Green Business and Marine Recreation Zones Lagoon Town Development Project" on Friday, 27th. As part of the project, two basement floors, 35 floors above ground, and 752 rooms will be built in Anhyeon-dong.
The project aims to stimulate the local economy by attracting private businesses to the special zone and creating private sector jobs, while also boosting the construction industry.
An official involved in the project implementation said, "Despite a challenging economic climate that prevents people from investing, the project implementers have decided to pursue the project on the basis of Gangneung's potential for growth and its appeal both domestically and internationally as a tourist destination." Moreover, he stated, "we hope this project will lead to Gangneung becoming a major international tourist destination."
A representative from Gangneung City stated that "a high-speed rail network connecting major cities would be established in the future, and various international events such as the 2023 World Choir, 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics, and 2026 ITS World Congress will be held in Gangneung,"
and he also added that "the city will continue to attract private investment to ensure the successful hosting of these events and the development of Gangneung, laying the foundation for its transformation into an international tourism and MICE industrial city by expanding its accommodation infrastructure."
