Support for Single-Parent Families

The number of single-parent families is on the rise due to an increase in divorce rates, bereavement, and financial difficulties. Accordingly, various support systems have been prepared for single parents to help them achieve self-reliance and stability in their lives.

Eligibility criteria

  • Single-parent family (mother/father and child) : A family consisting of a mother or father without a spouse and a child under the age of 18 (under the age of 22 if he/she is attending school)
  • Grandparent-headed family : A family where the grandparent(s) raise their grandchildren (under 18, under 22 if they are attending school) who are not financially supported by their parents.
  • Youth single-parent family : A single-parent family where the parent is under 24 years of age

Selection criteria

  • Single-parent families and grandparent-headed families : 52% of the standard median income or below (recognized income)
  • Youth single-parent families : 60% of the standard median income or below (recognized income)

Details of the support (support within budget)

  • Childcare support : Children under the age of 18, 200,000 won per month
  • Additional childcare support : 50,000 won per month for a child under the age of 5 in the case of single-parent families (Parent is over the age of 25) and grandparent-headed families
  • Learning support for elementary, middle, or high school student : 100,000 won per year for an elementary school student (50,000 won each in the first and second half of the year)
  • Support for independent living for college freshmen : 1.7 million won per person
  • Heating fuel cost : 350,000 won per household per year
  • Living subsidy : 50,000 won per household per month (low-income single-parent families admitted to a single-parent family welfare facility)
  • Support for self-reliance of single-parent youth (under 60% of the standard median income)
    • Childcare support : 350,000 won per month
    • GED study support : up to 1.54 million won per year
    • High school education expenses : actual expenses
  • Self-reliance allowance for single-parent youth (recipients of livelihood and medical benefits): : 100,000 won per month
  • Additional support : Admission to a single-parent family welfare facility
